Deputy President attends Anti-Doping Research Seminar

SLAM Deputy President Balbeer Singh Jessy was among the 80-odd participants at the Anti-Doping Agency of Malaysia (ADAMAS) organised "Anti Doping Social Science Research Seminar" from October 22-23 in USM Penang.

The main aim of the seminar was to create awareness, opportunities and identify research collaborations available to Asian, Oceania and Southeast Asia researchers, academicians and NADOs.

Research in Anti-Doping is critical to ensure sport remains drug free and also keep up with the various issues that arise from such usage in international tournaments.

The 11 NADOs in attendance, supported by a range of social and natural scientists (disciplines including: education, psychology, philosophy, law, nutrition, physiotherapy, economics, sport management, psychiatry and pharmacy), came up with many innovative and exciting proposals.

ADAMAS outgoing director Puan Azura Abidin made it a point to attend the official dinner, despite her new exciting role as Director General of the National Department of Youth and Sports.

Exciting interactive presentations by Dr Catherine Ordway, Associate Professor (Sports Management of University of Canberra), Tony Cunningham (WADA) and Dr Derwin Chan of Education University of Hong Kong, among others, made the gathering of minds very exciting.

It also was an opportunity to meet up old friends in the anti-doping fraternity including Prof Dr. Ahmad Fuad Shamsuddin, Dean Faculty of Pharmacy and Health Science, UNIKL and newer ones, including the energetic Dr Darshan Singh of the Centre of Drug Research, USM.

WADA Social Science Research Grant applications are due 18 November!!
