MESSAGE FROM SLAM PRESIDENT

Balbeer Singh Jessy

Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed members of the Sports Law Association of Malaysia (SLAM).

It is with profound pleasure and much anticipation that we celebrate the launch of our new website. SLAM was set up in 2016 as a professional body to inspire leadership, reform and interest in the issues of sports law and sports arbitration to create a knowledge-sharing platform for communication amongst not merely sports lawyers but players, enthusiasts and sports bodies in the sports industry, to achieve best practices among practitioners and sharing experience with anyone related to sports.

The primary focus of SLAM is to be the unifying platform for people interested in sports for the growth of sports law and sports arbitration in Malaysia and overseas. Its objectives include promoting the study and advancement of sports law and sports arbitration, creating awareness through workshops, seminars and webinars to discuss and understand the issues relating to sports law and arbitration, and creating and maintaining relationships with other sports enthusiasts and sports bodies.

Our Patron is YAM Tunku Imran, who has always been so supportive and willing to assist and advise SLAM since its inception.

Sports, in its essence, transcends boundaries, unifies nations, and inspires individuals to strive for greatness. It is a powerful force that embodies the values of fair play, integrity, and teamwork. As lawyers specializing in sports law, we have a unique responsibility to uphold these principles and ensure the effective governance and protection of the sporting community.

One of the key areas we must focus on is ensuring the integrity of sports. It is our duty to combat issues such as doping, match-fixing, corruption, and other forms of misconduct that threaten the very essence of fair competition. By collaborating with sports organizations, regulatory bodies, and the government, we can develop robust legal frameworks that safeguard the integrity of our sporting events and protect athletes' rights. Furthermore, we must address the legal aspects surrounding sports governance and administration. Properly enforcing rules and regulations are crucial for maintaining transparency, accountability, and good governance within sports organizations. By working closely with stakeholders and advocating for legal reforms, we can enhance the credibility and effectiveness of our sports administration structures.

Another area that demands our attention is athlete representation and protection. Athletes are the heart and soul of the sporting world, and we must safeguard their rights and interests. We must strive to create a legal framework that promotes fair contracts, protects athletes from exploitation, and provides avenues for dispute resolution. By doing so, we can foster an environment where athletes can thrive and excel, both on and off the field. Ladies and gentlemen, as members of the Sports Law Association of Malaysia, we have the power to shape the future of sports law in our nation. Let us work tirelessly together, harnessing our legal expertise and collective wisdom, to overcome challenges, seize opportunities, and contribute meaningfully to sports development in Malaysia.

I am confident that, with our shared commitment and determination, we can significantly impact our country's sports landscape. Together, let us uphold the values of fairness, justice, and sportsmanship, and pave the way for a brighter future for sports and the law in Malaysia. Thank you, and may our journey be filled with success and achievement.
